The Dudes\’ Brewing Kickoff Weekend

This weekend, the South Bay welcomed the latest microbrewery to the Southern California beer brewing scene, The Dudes\’ Brewing Company which is located in Torrance, CA. Unlike most microbreweries, The Dudes\’ does not currently have a tasting room, but rather have decided to break onto the scene by selling kegs to bars and restaurants, and will begin canning and distributing sometime in June of this year. There is talk of opening a tasting room in 2014 after they have their operation running exactly how they want. The Dudes\’ are having four kickoff parties this weekend, beginning at Hot\’s Kitchen in …

Business & Beer joins Meetup at The Rockefeller

The photos are from our Business & Beer networking group\’s gathering at the Hermosa Beach gastropub, The Rockefeller. As I mentioned last week, we have decided to give Meetup.com a chance to see if we could build on the number of people that attend our networking events. Last week, with short notice, we had two new attendees that were a direct result of our joining meetup. Last night there were at least three Meetup attendees, however, we had more new people that regulars last night and I am not entirely sure if some of the others were there because of …

South Bay Beer Week at Sophie\’s Place

This week our favorite gastropub in Redondo Beach, Sophie\’s Place, is having a South Bay Beer Week in which they have dedicated their eight taps to four of the South Bay\’s microbreweries; Monkish Brewing, Strand Brewing Company, El Segundo Brewing Company and Smog City Brewing. Sophie\’s Place is owned by three brothers that are craft beer fans and one, Bobby, is a home brewer. Bobby told me that \”many are still unaware of the incredible beers right in their own \’hood\” so he decided to have a \”dedication of South Bay beers on all taps all week.\” The beer on …

Torrance Firefighters\’ 41st Annual Spaghetti Dinner

These photos were taken Saturday at the Torrance Firefighters Association\’s 41st Annual Spaghetti Dinner which is a fundraiser to benefit the Alisa Ann Ruch California Burn Foundation (www.aarbf.org). The proceeds go towards sending young burn victims to Champ Camp, a week long summer camp for burn survivors ages 5-16. In addition to the spaghetti dinners served, the women\’s auxiliary of the Torrance Firefighters Association had a bake sale with all kinds of homemade goodies. It was another fine turnout and all the volunteers made sure cups were filled and tables were cleared and set for the next guest. I know …

Business & Beer Joins Meetup at Alpine Inn

These photos are from our Business & Beer gathering at Alpine Inn, located at the Alpine Village in Torrance. Over the weekend we decided that we would try out the Meetup business networking platform to see if we could generate some additional interest from people that do not use Facebook. What we did not realize is that they have an approval process, so it took a few days before we were actually added to the system. In two days we got 10 new members, but as far as attendance is concerned, we had two people that joined us as a …

Torrance Firefighters to hold 41st Annual Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser

This Saturday, March 9 2013, the Torrance Firefighters Association will hold their 41st Annual Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser to benefit the Alisa Ann Ruch California Burn Foundation (www.aarbf.org). The dinner will be held at the Ken Miller Recreation Center Auditorium. The money raised goes towards sending children to Champ Camp, a week long, residential summer camp for burn survivors ages 5-16, who have been treated at California hospitals or are current residents of California. Tanya and I went last year and had a great time. While it is put on by the Torrance Firefighters Association, there is participation from agencies all …

Strand Brewing Co hosts another Business & Beer

The South Bay\’s most fun business networking group, Business & Beer, returned to the Strand Brewing Company tasting room Thursday and I think it is safe to say that everyone had a good time. We had close to 15 people come by with several of them being second time attendees. In addition, Rich Marcello, one of the co-owners of Strand Brewing Co, is always good about directing his customers that might benefit from our networking group over to us. We definitely appreciate it. For those that are familiar with Strand Brewing Company but have not visited in the last couple …

The Brewery at Abigaile hosts another Business N Beer

Last night we had another Business & Beer, this time returning to my favorite brewpub, The Brewery at Abigaile in Hermosa Beach. This was our first meetup in two weeks, and the first since Lent started, so I am not sure how much this combination contributed to our smaller than normal turnout. That is okay, those of us that came out had a good time and it gave us time to get to know each other more. If you live or work in the South Bay area and enjoy networking while enjoying a local craft beer, you should look into …

Pliny the Younger release party at 38 Degrees

It is that time of year again; the groundhog looks for his shadow, people dodge asteroids and rumors of Pliny the Younger sightings start making their rounds. It was a week ago that I first heard rumors of Pliny the Younger being poured locally, but when I investigated further I discovered it was Pliny the Elder that was making an appearance; a nice IPA, but not quite a Younger. When I was at the Abigaile One Year Anniversary party a gentleman that was sitting next to us informed me that he had just gotten a text that Pliny the Younger …
